The upper rung is connection


The ventral vagal state is the model's green-light zone. You may feel present, flexible, and able to connect with another person. Your face and voice can express warmth, and you can listen without immediately preparing to defend yourself.


This state doesn't mean you're cheerful every moment. You can feel sad, worried, or tired while still having access to curiosity, communication, and support. The important feature is flexibility. You can respond rather than react.


The middle rung is mobilization


The sympathetic state gives you energy for action. Your heart may pound before a presentation. Your jaw may tighten during an argument. You might feel restless, impatient, angry, panicked, or driven to fix the problem immediately.

Connection can look ordinary

During conflict, you might interrupt because your body wants the threat resolved immediately. At work, you might keep opening your inbox because stopping feels unsafe. In parenting, you might snap over a small mess after carrying too much stress for too long.

Shutdown can look like “fine”
