Genevieve May, Registered Clinical Social Work Intern

An Inclusive Therapist Ready to Support You

Pronouns: She / Her / Hers

Email: genevieve@bybsandthrive.com

Hi, I’m Genevieve May. I graduated from Florida State University in 2017 with a Master of Social Work (MSW). I am passionate about working alongside teens and young adults who are exploring and understanding who they are. I am also proud to be an LGBTQIA+ affirmative, sex-positive therapist and I am here to support and guide you in exploring your gender identity and sexual orientation. I do this from a holistic approach, as I strongly believe in a body-mind-spirit connection and encourage natural, alternative ways of healing.

My clients often come to me for support during difficult life circumstances that are causing them high amounts of daily stress. I am skilled in guiding them through these trying times and the co-occurring mental health issues that impact their daily functioning such as depression, anxiety, self-harm, mood disorders, and substance abuse. Often, people desperately want relief from their pain and in their search for relief, accidentally create unhealthy habits that harm more than help. My goal is to take these harmful habits, and through gentle, warm guidance, turn them into coping habits that are comfortable and sustainable long-term no matter what life may bring you in the future.

I love to work with adolescents (14-17) because there is no other time in life that is so focused on figuring out ourselves than our teen years. A strong foundation of self-confidence and empowerment in our youth is what supports us later on when life begins to get more complex and messier. But if you didn’t get that opportunity in your teen years to have that kind of self-exploration, don’t worry - there is no time like the present and it is never too late to work on growing yourself.

There is no “one size fits all approach” for therapy. When you come in, I will take the time to really get to know you and understand you as we determine together what type of treatment is best for you. I use a few specific approaches in my work, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I also utilize play therapy and games (even for adults!) to provide an interactive learning experience and relief from the stresses of the daily world. I have seen these approaches aid my clients in curbing self-destructive habits and feeling like they are in control of their own minds.

I believe in a person-centered approach, which means therapy is guided by you and shaped for you specifically, because no one is a better expert on your life than you are.  I truly hope we get the opportunity to work together, and for you to see that therapy is for everyone!
