Your Body Isn't Betraying You — It's Been Carrying Too Much for Too Long
You've done everything right. The doctors, the specialists, the labs, the elimination diets, the supplements. You've researched your diagnosis more thoroughly than most clinicians have. You track your symptoms, manage your energy, and plan your life around how your body feels on any given day.
And still — something isn't adding up. Because even when you do everything right, you don't feel well. And nobody has ever really talked to you about what stress, trauma, and a nervous system stuck in overdrive might have to do with all of it.
That's where we come in.
At Be Your Best Self & Thrive Counseling in Sarasota, FL, we offer therapy specifically designed for people living with chronic illness — the fatigue, the pain, the grief of a body that doesn't work the way it used to, and the mental and emotional weight of managing all of it. Our therapist Holly Case brings both clinical expertise and lived experience with chronic illness to this work. She understands it from the inside out.
Signs and Symptoms That You Could Benefit from Chronic Illness Therapy
You might be ready for this work if...

In your body and health:
-
You're living with a chronic condition — autoimmune disease, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, POTS, Lyme, IBS, chronic pain, or symptoms that don't have a clean diagnosis yet
-
Your symptoms flare in response to stress, conflict, or emotional intensity
-
You've noticed that your physical health and your mental/emotional state are deeply connected — but nobody's ever helped you work with that connection
-
You feel exhausted in a way that sleep doesn't fix
-
Your body feels like something to manage rather than something to inhabit
In your mind and mood:
-
You grieve the person you were before you got sick — and feel guilty about that grief
-
You feel anxious about your body: monitoring symptoms, bracing for flares, afraid of what comes next
-
You've developed a complicated, sometimes adversarial relationship with your body
-
Depression has set in — the flatness of a life that's gotten much smaller than you planned
-
You feel invisible — like others don't understand what it's actually like
In your life and relationships:
-
You're exhausted from having to explain yourself — to doctors, to family, to employers
-
You've withdrawn from things you used to love because you can't trust your body enough to commit
-
You feel pressure to "push through" — and then pay for it afterward
-
Your sense of identity has become tangled up with being sick
-
You're in survival mode, and you've been there so long you've forgotten what it felt like not to be
The Link Between Trauma, the Nervous System, and Chronic Illness
This is where Holly's work goes deeper than most therapy.
Research in psychoneuroimmunology — the science of how the mind, nervous system, and immune system interact — consistently shows that chronic stress and unresolved trauma have measurable effects on the body. Inflammation, immune dysregulation, hormonal disruption, gut health, pain sensitivity — all of these can be directly influenced by a nervous system that has been stuck in a survival state for a long time.
For many people with chronic illness, there is a history of trauma, prolonged stress, or a body that learned early on that the world wasn't entirely safe. The nervous system adapted — beautifully, intelligently — to protect you. But those same adaptations, carried into adult life, can manifest as a system that is chronically activated, chronically inflamed, and chronically exhausted.
This doesn't mean your symptoms are "in your head." It means your body and your history are connected in ways that deserve real clinical attention — not dismissal.
Addressing the nervous system doesn't cure chronic illness. But for many clients, it becomes the missing piece that finally starts to shift things.

Holly Case, M.A., RMHCI, NCC
Supervised by Jamie Molnar, LMHC
Holly came to chronic illness therapy through her own journey. When she began experiencing chronic illness herself, she found that the path to healing led her into somatic movement, breathwork, and body-based practices — and ultimately, into a deep understanding of how the nervous system and the body are inseparable.
That personal path is woven into how she works. Holly doesn't approach chronic illness as a purely medical problem or a purely psychological one — she holds the whole picture, with genuine respect for how complex and exhausting it is to navigate. Her sessions are warm, unhurried, and deeply attuned to where your system is on any given day.
She holds a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling from Western Kentucky University, with specialized training in somatic therapy, IFS-informed parts work, and embodiment facilitation. Holly sees clients in person at the BYBS and Thrive Sarasota counseling office and online throughout Florida.
Our Approach to Chronic Illness Therapy in Sarasota
Somatic Therapy & Nervous System Regulation — the foundation of Holly's work. Using body-based practices — breathwork, grounding, body awareness, progressive muscle relaxation, guided imagery — we help your nervous system find genuine safety, not just managed stress. Over time, this changes your baseline: less reactivity, less inflammation, more capacity.
IFS-Informed Parts Work — chronic illness creates parts. The part that pushes through no matter what. The part that monitors every symptom. The part that grieves. The part that's furious. The part that has accepted too little. Parts work helps you develop a relationship with all of these — with compassion rather than conflict — so they can begin to soften.
Trauma-Informed Care — Holly holds an understanding that for many clients with chronic illness, there is a trauma history underneath — sometimes obvious, sometimes not. The therapeutic relationship is built carefully, paced to your nervous system, never rushed.
Grief Work — chronic illness involves real, ongoing loss. Loss of the body you had, the plans you made, the life you assumed you'd live. That grief deserves space — not minimizing, not toxic positivity, not pressure to "find the silver lining."
Practical Coping & Self-Compassion — Holly also brings evidence-based tools for managing the cognitive and emotional load of chronic illness: pacing, self-compassion practices, communication strategies, and ways of building a life that works with your body rather than constantly fighting it.
What to Expect in Chronic Illness Therapy with Holly
Your Free Consult — A 15-minute call to get acquainted. Holly will listen to where you are, what you've been through, and what you're hoping for. No pressure, no agenda.
Your First Sessions — We start with your story — your health journey, your history, what's worked and what hasn't. Holly approaches this with genuine curiosity and zero judgment. Many clients describe the first few sessions as the first time they've felt truly heard about all of it.
Building Safety — Before we go deep, we build resources. Grounding tools, nervous system practices, internal anchors. This is the foundation that makes the deeper work possible.
The Deeper Work — Parts work, somatic exploration, trauma processing at whatever pace your system is ready for. This is where lasting change happens — not at the level of managing symptoms, but at the level of the nervous system itself.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chronic Illness Therapy in Sarasota, FL
Do I need a formal diagnosis to benefit from chronic illness therapy?
No. Holly works with people who have clear diagnoses and people who are still searching for answers — including those with chronic symptoms that haven't been explained by testing. The therapeutic work is relevant regardless of whether you have a label for what's happening.
How does therapy help with a physical illness?
Therapy for chronic illness addresses the mental, emotional, and nervous system dimensions of living with a body that is in chronic stress or pain. This includes grief, identity, anxiety, depression, and — significantly — the nervous system's role in inflammation and immune function. For many clients, this work becomes an important part of their overall health picture alongside their medical care.
Do you work alongside my medical team?
Yes. Holly's work is complementary to, not a replacement for, medical care. With your permission, she can communicate with other providers to ensure your care is coordinated.
Is somatic therapy safe if I'm already dealing with physical symptoms?
Yes — and Holly is careful to pace somatic work appropriately. Body-based practices are introduced gradually and always within your window of tolerance. The goal is to create more safety in the body, not to overwhelm a system that's already under stress.
Do you offer online therapy for chronic illness in Florida?
Yes. Holly offers secure telehealth sessions throughout Florida — a particularly good fit for clients whose energy or symptoms make travel difficult on some days.
How much does chronic illness therapy cost in Sarasota?
Sessions with Holly Case are $120 for 50 minutes. We are an out-of-pocket practice and provide superbills for possible insurance reimbursement. HSA and FSA cards accepted.
